Marsa Alam or Sharm El Sheikh for Snorkeling? An Honest Comparison

Choose Marsa Alam if wild spinner dolphins at a protected lagoon, a quieter strip, and days built around a boat are the point of the holiday. Choose Sharm El Sheikh if you want a large resort town, more evening options, and a long-established dive-and-snorkel scene on the Sinai coast.

They are not day-trip distance from each other. Pick a base. We would rather you enjoy Sharm than sit in Marsa Alam wishing you had nightlife we do not have. The Hurghada version of this argument is already written: Marsa Alam or Hurghada.

Marsa Alam’s headline days are specific: Samadai for the horseshoe lagoon, Sataya for the longer southern day, Abu Dabbab for seagrass, turtles and a possible dugong. Those sites are why people fly here.

Sharm’s reputation sits on a different map — Sinai, Tiran, Ras Mohammed, house reefs under big hotels, a huge choice of boats. That can be excellent snorkeling. It is not a substitute for 'I want Dolphin House Samadai on Tuesday.' If that sentence is yours, you need Marsa Alam as a base, not a transfer fantasy.

Sharm is a resort city. Naama Bay and the hotel zones are built for dinner, shops, and staying up. Marsa Alam is spread out, quieter, and more hotel-bound after dark. We said the same about Hurghada and we will say it about Sharm: if evenings matter as much as mornings, we are not the better town.

If you want the opposite — fewer vendors, earlier nights, a minibus at 07:00 — Marsa Alam’s quiet is the feature, not a lack of effort.

Sharm has been a mass-market Red Sea hub for decades. Popular reefs can be busy. Marsa Alam is not empty, and Samadai on a peak morning is not a private lagoon, but the baseline is still a smaller destination. Sataya exists specifically because fewer operators drive that far.

Neither place is wilderness camping. Both can feel crowded on the wrong boat. Operator choice matters in both towns. We would not pretend Marsa Alam has no other boats; we would pretend even less that Sharm is empty.

Flight networks change by season and city of origin. Sharm and Hurghada often have more European connections than Marsa Alam. That can mean cheaper or more frequent seats — not always, and we will not quote fares that go stale. Check both. If the only affordable flight is Sharm, that can decide the holiday before reefs do, and that is a valid decision.

Do not plan to 'pop down' to Marsa Alam for a dolphin day from Sharm. The distance makes it a relocation, not an excursion.

Send yourself to Marsa Alam if the holiday is the boat and the animals — and you have read what you will actually see so the odds are honest. Send yourself to Sharm if the holiday is a resort town that also has good snorkeling.
