The short answer

Beginners can snorkel at Samadai. Life vests are included, the briefing happens before you enter, and guides expect first-timers. You do not need to be a strong swimmer. You do need to be comfortable with your face in the water, out of your depth, getting on and off a boat, and a 45-minute crossing each way.

If any of that makes you freeze, start with your first time in the Red Sea on the Abu Dabbab day instead. We sell Samadai. We still say that, because a panicked first hour in a busy lagoon is a poor way to meet dolphins — and a poor way to enjoy the reef if the dolphins are elsewhere.

  • Comfortable floating with a vest → Samadai is realistic
  • Never put your face in water / hate boats → Abu Dabbab first
  • Travelling with young children → usually Abu Dabbab; see the kids guide
  • Tell the guide it is your first time, on the quay, not in the water

What 'beginner' actually means on this reef

Samadai is a protected lagoon, not a swimming pool. The water in the permitted zone is still open water. There can be other boats. You enter from the boat, not by wading from a beach. A vest keeps you at the surface; it does not remove the feeling of deep water under you.

The guests who do well on a first Samadai day are not the fittest. They are the ones who listen, float, and do not sprint at the first fin they see. The guests who struggle are often decent hotel-pool swimmers who have never breathed through a tube, then try to keep up with a group that is already comfortable.

The parts that catch first-timers

The crossing. Forty-five minutes is enough to feel unwell if you are prone to it. Tablets before you leave the hotel, not after the boat leaves the quay. The shape of the day covers that in order.

Getting in and out. There is a moment with a ladder, fins, and other people waiting. Ask for a hand. Nobody minds. Trying to look experienced is how people crack shins.

The mask. Fit matters more than bravery. If it leaks on your face in air, change it. Fog is normal. Panic is optional.

The dolphins, if they appear. You snorkel in the allowed area while they move through on their own line. You do not swim into the pod. Chasing them is against the site rules and it ends the encounter. Calm beginners often see more than fit guests who kick hard.

When we would rather you pick Abu Dabbab

Pick Abu Dabbab first if you are unsure you can float in open water, if a moving boat bothers you, or if you want the option of a shorter, shallower first stop in seagrass with turtles that are seen on most days. That trip is still a boat day with two snorkel stops — it is not a hotel swimming lesson — but the sea time is shorter and the group is used to mixed ability.

Pick Abu Dabbab first if you have young children. Which trips actually work for kids is the family version of this advice. Sataya is the wrong first day for almost every nervous beginner: ten hours, a two-hour drive each way, passport paperwork the day before.

How to set yourself up on a Samadai morning

Say it plainly at pickup or on the quay: first time, stay near me. Guides position themselves for that. Stay in the vest even if you 'can swim'. Do the first session close to the boat. Skip the second if you are done — two sessions is the plan, not a requirement that you use both.

If the pod is in, float. If it is not, you still have a protected reef. That is the deal at Dolphin House, and it is the same deal for experts. Best time to see dolphins explains why morning and wind matter more than your fitness.

Frequently asked questions

Can a complete beginner do the Dolphin House trip at Samadai?

Yes, if you can float with a life vest and accept open water off a boat. Tell the guide it is your first time. If boats or deep water scare you, start at Abu Dabbab.

Do I need to know how to swim?

You need to be comfortable in water with a vest, not a strong swimmer. If being out of your depth is distressing even with flotation, this is the wrong first trip.

Is the water deep at Samadai?

You are in open water in a lagoon, not standing on a beach. The vest keeps you at the surface. You are not expected to dive.

Will I hold the group back?

No. Sessions are guided and timed for mixed groups. Staying near the boat is normal, not a failure.

Should my first trip be Samadai or Abu Dabbab?

Abu Dabbab if you want the gentler day. Samadai if dolphins are the point and you can handle a 45-minute crossing and a boat entry. Sataya is a poor first outing.
